St. Albans Abbey

Married with two grown-up children and two grandchildren.  My wife was a nurse when I met her in Uganda. I have been in Holy Orders in the Church of England (Episcopal) since 1984, and a hospital and hospice chaplain since that time.

Have followed a varied career after service as an Army officer during National Service in Kenya. I then joined HM Overseas Civil Service as a Trade Development Officer in Uganda developing African businesses, but was seconded to refugee relief schemes when the neighbouring Belgian Congo first became independent and also during the first civil strife in Ruanda Urundi in 1960.

After returning to England in 1962, I managed a holiday organisation, arranging outdoor holidays mainly in Britain based on its own hotels/guest houses, (See Holidays page) became their Chief Executive, and have been an Honorary Vice President.  I left it to enter the Church in 1984 and worked in a British National Health Service hospital for 15 years, and the last 15 years as chaplain to a hospice as well.

Was appointed Bishop's Adviser for Hospital Chaplaincies in 1994 and was made an Hon. Canon of St. Albans Cathedral and Abbey Church in March 1996.  Retired from the NHS in April 1999, though I continue to be a chaplain at the Peace Hospice, Watford.
