St. Albans Abbey

An Honorary Canonry is an honour conferred by a bishop.  I was made a Canon by the Bishop of St. Albans in 1996, and a Canon Emeritus on my retirement from full-time ministry at Easter 1999. Canons have the badge (above), of the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St. Alban, on a black scarf which they wear at services they attend.  Around the wall of the Quire of the Cathedral are stalls assigned to the Canons (you can see them in most cathedrals). This limits the number of Honorary Canons at any one time.

There are also 5 Canons Residentiary at St. Albans(who work in and from the Abbey), plus 3 Archdeacons, a Sub Dean and the Dean of the Cathedral.  Each seat is named after an Abbot or Saint, and the one which was assigned to me commemorates St. Oswin.
